Tiny hands, tiny feet. Fingers and toes no bigger than half an inch. A head to large for the body, so that it seems the frail neck will snap in half before it bends properly.
A voice so loud its a wonder the windows dont break. Nights of exhaustion, sleepless walking, endless feeding.
Pure joy, a tiny bundle so precious and delicate. Eyes so innocent and wide, regarding the world with wonder. Fine hair, barely existing, hidden under a thick cap to prevent a chill.
A pure being, knowing nothing, expecting nothing, burdened with so much. A loving being, only understanding the barest means of survival.
A new life. A new beginning.
Bigger, stronger, louder, more annoying. Aggravating, toy-stealing pain in the butt. Faster, tougher, peskier.
Helpful, trustworthy, protective. Kind, patient, explanatory. Quick to act in defense, quick to blame, quick to apologize.
Gentle hands, strong embrace, tears, friendship, races, laughter.
I remember the strength in your arms. The way your voice sounds, the way you laugh when I wave my arms to be picked up.
I remember the color of your hair and eyes, the roughness of your beard when I gave you kisses, the feel and smell of your clothes when you came up from wood-working in the basement.
I miss you now, but I dont know how to talk to you. Its been so long since I had to try, and Ive forgotten the easy rhythm. I wish I hadnt forgotten, I miss being able to get together with you and just be.
Years are a long time to go with no contact. I have so many questions for you, but no idea as to how to ask them. I dont want to pry, but I want to know.
You used to protect me, and even though I dont need the protection I still need you. You were the most important thing to me, and I never got to be with you as often as I wanted to.
I miss you Daddy.
